3 Kinds of Games That Make Learning Fun

Think your little learner is getting tired of lectures and worksheets? Make learning fun again with these games:

Strategy Games

A lot of the classic board games you grew up with like chess, Chinese checkers, and backgammon are perfect for honing your child’s strategic thinking. They require players to use their visual analysis, memory, imagination, and critical thinking. But with board games rising in popularity, there are more games for your family to discover and spend an afternoon playing.

Imagination Games

Send your child’s imagination flying with open-ended activities like role-playing that allow him to express himself freely. When he has to solve a hypothetical situation or put himself in someone else’s shoes, he develops foresight, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.

You can also encourage him with visual and word games. Charades and Pictionary are great exercises for him to think of other ways to communicate something to others. Crossword, jumbled word puzzles, and more let your child mix and match letters while developing his vocabulary.

In addition, you can play association games with your child, where you give him a word or visual cue and ask him “What does that look like to you?” or “What does that make you think of?”

These are just some examples of great games to spark your child’s imagination. Go ahead, play, and explore!

Coordination and Cooperative Games

These games are perfect in improving your child's mental and motor skills, while developing his social skills, team spirit, and good sportsmanship.

You can get him into sports like table tennis, basketball, soccer, and more, or simply play in the backyard with some friends. “Simon Says” is a classic game that tests how well your child can follow directions. “Cops Robbers”, “Patintero”, “Langit at Lupa”, and more are fun group games that involve teamwork. You can also look into cooperative games where teams have to spell a word or arrange something in a sequence – developing spelling and counting skills, while building up social skills.

There are so many games to play and so many ways to learn. Don’t feel stuck with playing just one or stop yourself from creating your own. As long as your child is having fun, learning becomes something to look forward to every day.
